With all the new forms of VR headsets and systems now available, choosing the right platform for your event can be more confusing than ever.  This article will give you a brief overview and guide to help you navigate the way, but we encourage you to give us a call to discuss your specific needs.

Before deciding on a VR platform, here are a few basic considerations:

  • What software, videos, games or experiences are you looking to run on your VR system?  More than anything else, this will dictate what system you will need to use. Each platform has its own library of compatible and available software.  If you are using your own software or 360 videos, you will need to know from the designer what platforms it will run on.
  • How many people are you looking to participate in a given time period?
  • How much physical space is available at your venue or booth for use of VR?
  • What quality of resolution and graphics do y9oru require for your applications?
  • Your budget for your VR experience?

Oculus GO
For basic needs, this is one of the more popular systems available for the rental for the price.  It is ideal for special occasions and events where you may need quite a few units but do not want to break the budget. All of our GO rentals come pre-loaded with a large variety of software, games, and experiences at no extra charge. Requires less space than all other units and is generally used while seated.  REQUIRED ON SITE:  WiFi, electric, 8′ table and 1 chair per unit.

PROS

  • Works without a phone or computer
  • Large library of VR apps
  • Easy setup
  • Fits comfortably
  • Great image quality
  • Inexpensive
  • Motion controller included as standard
  • Go’s skull-bounced 3D sound modeling is pretty cool

CONS

  • Limited motion tracking
  • Still a bit limited by its mobile hardware
  • Doesn’t support 6 degrees of freedom
  • Battery life could be better – so we rent with a USB tethering system that allows them to charge while being used.
  • Lack of screen-sharing and local-multiplayer options
  • No killer app

Oculus Quest
This is the next step up from the GO and the newest of the Oculus VR systems.  Oculus Quest is a standalone, mobile, powerful VR headset with two hand controllers & six degrees of freedom. Ideal for both special occasion and corporate events where budget is still a major factor. Generally requires more floor space with each user taking up and 8′ x 10′ area.
REQUIRED ON SITE:  WiFi and adequate space.

PROS

  • Completely self-contained VR experience – no phone or computer needed
  • Offers 6 degrees of freedom
  • New inside-out tracking works well
  • Dual hand controllers
  • Convenient tetherless design
  • Reasonable price but a bit more substantial than the GO units
  • Sharp OLED displays
  • Solid motion tracking without external sensors
  • Easy to use and configure
  • Passthrough cameras allow easy setup of the play area, and a way to check your surroundings without taking off the headset

CONS

  • Battery life could be better, so we rent with USB cable and portable battery pack that user keeps in pocket
  • Limited software experiences and much more epensive. The availability of software titles has not caught up yet and many are the same as on the GO units for more than twice the price. However there are still some great games now available and more being constantly added.
  • Less powerful than wired headsets
  • Sometimes uncomfortable – does not fit on the head and face as well as GO or Rift systems

Oculus Rift & Rift S
The Oculus Rift & Rift S are  specially designed virtual reality display that makes use of state-of-the-art display systems, optics and refresh rates to provide a high level of visual fidelity and an immersive, wide field of view.  Both systems require the use of a high end gaming computer and graphics card which we supply with each rental.  The original Rift systems are being replaced now with Rift S.  The primary difference being that the Rift S is not dependent on the set up of external sensors that are required for the original Rift systems. This system is great for branding events, corporate events, trade shows, product promotion and audience engagement.
REQUIRED ON SITE:  WiFi, electric, 8′ table and 10′ x 10′ space per unit.

PROS

  • Great resolution and graphics
  • Accurate motion tracking for both headset and controllers
  • Excellent dual hand controllers
  • Comfortable for its weight
  • Lots of software and applications available
  • Monitor allows guests to watch what end user is experiencing

CONS

  • Rift S – Display ditches AMOLED for LCD
  • Inside-out tracking on Rift S means less accuracy for controllers in particular
  • Still tethered to a gaming PC
  • DisplayPort-only; no HDMI
  • Rift has built in headphones but Rift S is lacking built-in headphones and hardware-based IPD adjustment
  • More expensive to rent than Go or Quest units because of gaming computer and required set up

HTC Vive Pro
The Vive Pro is the best consumer VR headset that money can buy today. HTC made advances in comfort and image quality that will carry forward into coming generations of VR hardware. The cost of rental is more expensive, but if you’re serious about VR, it’s worth it.  The system requires the use of a high end gaming computer and graphics card which we supply with each rental. If budget permits and you are looking to impress, this is the best of the VR systems available for rent.
